Dosage | 14 years and older: Take 3 capsules 2 times daily (morning and evening). Drink a glass of water (8 ounces or 250 ml) with each dose. Drink plenty of fluids. Effects seen within 12 to 24 hours after the first dose and sometimes after 2 to 3 days. Wait 2 hours before and after taking other medications. Consult a health care practitioner for use beyond 4 to 6 weeks. |
Precautions | Consult a health care practitioner if symptoms worsen or if constipation persists after 7 days of use. Consult a health care practitioner immediately if you experience chest pain, vomiting, or if you have trouble swallowing or breathing after taking this product. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are taking medications that inhibit peristalsis (e.g., opiates, loperamide) or if you have a liver disorder. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever (these symptoms may be signs of abnormal constrictions of the gastrointestinal tract, disease of the esophagus, upper stomach opening (cardia), existing or potential intestinal obstruction, paralysis of the intestine, megacolon, fecal impaction, inflammation of the colon, or appendicitis). |
Contraindications | Do not use if you have experienced changes in bowel habits for more than 2 weeks, if you have undiagnosed rectal bleeding, or if taking another laxative has not resulted in a bowel movement, or if you have swallowing problems or if you have diabetes mellitus characterized by blood glucose levels that are difficult to regulate, or if you have hypokalemia, high blood pressure, or cardiovascular or renal disorders or if you are taking thiazide diuretics, cardiac glycosides, corticosteroids, stimulant laxatives or any other medication that may aggravate electrolyte imbalances. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. |
Known side effects | Hypersensitivity, such as an allergy, may occur after ingesting psyllium. In this case, discontinue use. May cause flatulence. |
